WIP Wednesday, kids edition

I have been thinking of a character for the last year. It started out as an early chapter book, but that didn't work out. I have found this character is much better for the picture book format. It also took me about that long to figure out what to do with him, because good characters are sometimes hampered by the situations you can effectively put them into. Here is the beginning of an almost done picture book.

Harry the dog lived with the Pawson family It was Harry, Mr. Pawson, Mrs, Pawson and baby Pawson. Harry the dog was an escape artist. There was nothing that could keep him in. He had escaped from the house. He had escaped from the yard. He could even escape from his leash.

It was always getting him in trouble.
I would post more but it is very short to begin with. The tenative title is Harry, The Great Houndini.
This is not my first foray into picture books. It probably won't be my last. I hope to finish it later this week and beta it with some adults (they are the target audience of children's books, believe it or not. If they don't like them, they don't buy them. Pretty simple economics. Why do you think Lego blocks are so big- they are fun for adults to play with as well.)

Love the title.

That sounds like great fun-- I adore kids' books, and you're right, we are the target in that way.

Awesome. And Legos...hell yeah. That's what the uber-cute Star Wars Legos are all about.

Nat, right back at you.

Danielle, these things are due to change, but I like it too.

Katey, more than we know.

Aaron, I have successfully turned my son into a building blocker. Star Wars Lego's are next on my list for him. :)

I love Lego. :D

I've tried to write picture books but they are so hard and for some reason always end nasty... One had a chair swallowing grandma, and the other the ducks ended up impaled. Fear for my nephews and neices.

Yours, however, sounds delightful. Fingers crossed.

Cate, my first picture book was a collaboration with my college roommate called Furious George. It was brutal. Bad monkey. :)

Michele, Thanks for coming over. You won't be disappointed in Stuart's book. It was really well done.

Sounds awesome. Will you be doing the pictures as well?

Barry, I may have a degree in fine arts but I can't draw stick figures. Cute dogs are well beyond my ability. Picture book manuscripts are best served without the pictures anyway. It is a weird market like that.

Sounds like fun! I like the beginning; good luck with it!

You might need to change Harry's name, just because Harry the Dirty Dog is a very famous picture book, but then again it's a very old book too. I think there's room for another dog named Harry. :)

K.C., I loved Harry the Dirty Dog. However, no one has ever heard of Harry Houdini's brother Rex.

Too cute. I had a picture book idea and tried... they're a LOT harder than they look!

I have a picture book that I'm just not sure what to do with, so it's currently languishing in a drawer. It's a tough market! I wish you luck/
